Athletes and Chiropractic

Tiger Woods

Golf great, Tiger Woods, is another example of what the benefits of chiropractic care can offer an athlete. Tiger Woods states, "lifting weights and seeing a chiropractor on a regular basis has made me a better golfer. I've been going to Chiropractors for as long as I can remember. It's as important to my training as practicing my swing.”

"Being a chiropractic patient has really helped me a lot," Tiger asserted . "When I was in a growth spurt, my back became very sore and I was weak. My chiropractor really helped me. Not only did he adjust my spine, he also gave me strengthening exercises to do. If you are  gangly, like I am, or play sports, I would recommend chiropractic."

Barry Bonds

barrybonds.jpgThree-time winner of the National League's Most Valuable Player, Barry Bonds, is another avid proponent of chiropractic care. He has been under chiropractic care since 1993. "Your body is being treated like it is supposed to be with chiropractic care", stated Bonds. He recommends that every athlete should have some contact with a chiropractor. Barry has even requested that a chiropractor be available to him in every city on the team's schedule! He has helped carry the chiropractic torch by graciously allowing our profession to publicly announce his feelings about chiropractic in the media. Over six years ago Barry fell down a flight of steps during spring training, the head athletic trainer at the time, called Barry’s chiropractor to assess his condition before he received an MRI later that day. When he arrived, Barry was in severe pain. He had pain radiating into his hip and groin. He was significantly limited in lumbar range of

motion. When he checked him, his leg length was off by an inch; his pelvis was severely rotated; and his SI joint was locked. After getting the green light from the head athletic trainer, he simply did what any of us would have done: he balanced him out. Barry got off of the table, bent left and right, forward and back and said, "The pain is totally gone!" Needless to say, everybody standing around watching, including the chiropractor, breathed a collective sigh of relief! When Barry left the clubhouse, there was a large number of media people waiting for him, for apparently the word of his fall and injury had leaked out. They shoved their tape recorders and microphones in his face and asked him how he felt. Bonds stated "I just saw my chiropractor. I feel 100 percent better."

Barry’s chiropractor was contacted by a liaisACAfrom the ACA, who asked if Barry would be willing to be interviewed ACAthat the ACA could put the snewswireshe newswires. He agreed without hesitation. During that interview, Barry observed: "I think it should be mandatory to see a chiropractor and massage therapist." The crew filmed Rod Beck (the Giants' all-time saves leader), Barry, and other players getting adjusted. During Barry's interview, he related how chiropractic adjustments helped clear up his sinuses. He also explained how the body gets out of balance, causing the hamstrings to get tight, and how getting adjusted helps him perform at his best.

RDan O’Brien, US Olympic TeamMedalistdalist iDecathalonthalon

Dan_o__brian.jpgDan O'Brien said in the August 1996 issue of USA Today, "you obviously can't compete at your fullest if you're not in alignment. It was the holistic idea that I liked about Chiropractic. I really think Chiropractic is essential in running. If I could put a percentage on it, I think I compete eight to ten percent better from regular Chiropractic use, if not more. It is essential for me and my training routine," declared O'Brien.

On a separate occasion he also stated, "You obviously can't compete at your fullest if you're not in alignment. And your body can't heal if your back is not in alignment. It was the holistic idea that I liked about chiropractic and that is what track and field is about. Every track and field athlete that I have ever met has seen a chiropractor at one time or another. In track and field, it is absolutely essential. Chiropractic care is one of the things I think that no one has denied or refuted."

"I am very fortunate to have, so to speak, my in-house chiropractor, Dr. Franco Colombu, as my own personal chiropractor. He adjusts my wife, my kids, me, everybody gets an adjustment. And we feel always great when Franco leaves. Even when I have athletic inj1055189.jpguries, he's always there for me and helps me. That's why I always will be traveling ... all over the world, talking highly about the profession of chiropractic. You chiropractic doctors are really miracle workers."1

"[Back in the 1970s] Franco would go very intensely to chiropractic college every day. He worked on me all the time. During the course of his education he got incredibly good with both the theoretical and the practical (aspects of adjusting) ... every time I had an injury, I could call Franco ... I would get an adjustment, three or four, and the problem would be gone. So you know, when you see that happening in your own body, that with chiropractic you will be 100 percent, it's just fantastic."2

"But every time that I had a problem with an elbow injury, shoulder injury, or back injury, he was always right there with the adjustments. This is the way I found out the best way of going is to use chiropractors, not only after injuries, but also before injury."3

"People who don't believe in chiropractic always ask me about it. I have now become like a spokesperson for chiropractic."

"Let me tell you there is no better profession than chiropractic. You really helped me. Every day you are preventing injuries; every day you are helping people. You let them walk out of your office feeling great about themselves and feeling good in their bodies, relieving pain. I can tell you this from firsthand experience."5

"What you do is really powerful."
